The Moon Crush “Avett Moon” Music Festival, held November 8-10, 2024, at Seascape Golf Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida, was an unforgettable blend of folk, bluegrass, and Americana set against the stunning Gulf Coast backdrop. The three-day event, headlined by The Avett Brothers, brought together music lovers in a relaxing, vacation-like atmosphere. As a photojournalist, it felt like more than a concert; it was a celebration of community and music.
A Unique Festival Concept
Moon Crush redefined the small-scale festival experience. Founder Andy Levine, CEO of Topeka Music Vacations, designed the event to make fans feel like they were on vacation, blending world-class performances with the serenity of a beachside resort. The festival was both laid-back and organized, thanks in part to a team of friendly, helpful volunteers who went above and beyond, even escorting guests to their seats. The Topeka app further enhanced convenience, allowing attendees to order food and drinks directly to their seats—a thoughtful touch that made the experience even more enjoyable.

Stellar Lineup: Folk, Bluegrass, and Soul
The festival’s lineup featured an impressive mix of genres and talent. The Avett Brothers took center stage as the headliners, delivering an emotional and high-energy set that had the crowd singing along to favorites like “I And Love And You” and “Kick Drum Heart.” Their performance was the heart of the festival, with even the rain on Sunday night failing to dampen the crowd’s spirits.

Supporting acts were equally captivating. Greensky Bluegrass delivered an unforgettable performance, with songs like “Time>Breathe Reprise” and “Past My Prime” getting the crowd dancing and singing in unison. Shakey Graves (Alejandro Rose-Garcia) engaged the audience with his storytelling, blending folk and blues, while adding a surprise proposal on stage that had the crowd cheering.

Band of Horses brought heavy nostalgia, with songs like “No One’s Gonna Love You” and “The Funeral” transporting fans back to the early 2000s. Their set was a highlight, with the crowd singing along in full force, proving their enduring appeal. Grace Potter was a force of nature, seamlessly switching between electric guitar, Hammond B3 organ, and tambourine. Her soul-filled performance, with songs like “Medicine” and “Paris (Ooh La La),” had the entire audience captivated by her energy and raw talent.

The openers also shone brightly. Hailey Whitters, with her southern charm, opened the festival with a mix of original songs like “Everything She Ain’t” and covers, including a crowd-pleasing rendition of “I Had Some Help.” Jamestown Revival added their funky folk vibes to the evening, with harmonies on tracks like “Midnight Hour” that perfectly matched the sunset backdrop. Lastly, The Brook & The Bluff brought their indie-funk flavor, with lead vocalist Joseph Settine impressing despite technical difficulties. Their energetic performance was full of charm, keeping the crowd grooving.
A Festival of Community and Connection
The festival’s true magic lay in the sense of community it fostered. From the staff’s attention to detail to the genuine connections between artists and fans, Moon Crush was more than just a series of performances—it was a shared experience. Whether it was dancing to Greensky Bluegrass or singing with The Avett Brothers, the connection between the artists and the crowd felt personal and genuine.
As the final notes of The Avett Brothers rang out, it was clear: Moon Crush “Avett Moon” isn’t just another festival—it’s an experience. From the incredible music to the relaxed vibe and sense of community, this festival is one you don’t want to miss. If you’re looking for a getaway that combines great music and a laid-back atmosphere, Moon Crush is where you need to be next year.
