The night Purity Ring, and opening act yuinVERSE, took the stage at Brooklyn Steel had a very magic and ethereal vibe to it brought to life by their two different yet beautiful designs and their excellent performances. Purity Ring is currently on tour for their latest album, the self-titled “Purity Ring” is their fourth album, with the previous album released five years earlier.
Purity Ring is a two person band of vocalist Megan James and instrumentalist Corin Roddick. Finding quick and early success with their first album “Shrines” in 2012. Continuing their strong efforts in their future pop sound has gained them a strong loyal fanbase as well as gained the attention of rapper Danny Brown who has collaborated with them multiple times. With their previous album having been released early April 2020, the duo found themselves unable to promote the album due to quarantine. The delay allowed them time to craft a new set of songs for the “Graves” EP which was released in 2022 coinciding with the long awaited tour.
Beginning the night was solo artist yuniVERSE, an Indonesian-Austrailian art that creates electronic pop songs that are a deep introspective look into her life and emotions. Her backdrop on the stage were oversized flowers illuminated by various colors, along with her costuming and performance created a vibrant show. Her music is a fine companion to Purity Ring and helped prepare the audience for the main act of the night.
With their new album “Purity Ring” the band worked around the concept of making a soundtrack for a fictional role playing game, drawing inspiration from games such as Final Fantasy X and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Their stage design was a stunning production using new spinning LED fans to project hologram images around them immersing them into the video game worlds they’ve created. Brought to life by the projections, the two musicians brought their soundtrack to life surrounded by forests, tornadoes of leaves, interactive swirls of fire, and magical starry skies. Their current tour is not one to be missed as it is a feast for the eyes and ears.
