Shortly after opening for Mitski’s North American Tour in 2024, marking Lamp’s first-ever appearance in the U.S., the Japanese trio returned with their own headlining tour, Future Behind Me.

Though it was their first time performing in both St. Petersburg and Florida (alongside their Orlando show), Lamp drew an impressive crowd that filled the space of Jannus Live. The weather was a perfect temperature for an outdoor concert, with the air humming melodies and the live night sky with synths and guitar chords. The atmosphere complemented Lamp’s signature sound of their discography, a blend of city pop, bossa nova, and Shibuya-kei.

Lamp was started in the year 2000 which was noted during the concert that this year marks Lamp’s 25th anniversary as a band, a milestone they brushed off jokingly, “It’s just another year for us.” The band consists of three core members: Kaori Sakakibara, accordion and flute player and lead female vocalist; Yusuke Nagai, guitarist and lead male vocalist; and Taiyo Someya, a guitar specialist.

As performers, Lamp exemplifies musical mastery. Alongside three supporting musicians, each member switched between multiple instruments throughout the set often playing three or more each. This showcases not only their range as musicians but the craftsmanship behind their songwriting.

The concert closed with a string of fan favorites and an energetic drum-off encore that left the crowd cheering well into the night. After the show, the band hosted a meet and greet, signing records and taking photos with fans who had waited patiently in line. By the end of the night, all four vinyl records they had for sale had completely sold out, a testament to the love and anticipation surrounding their long-awaited U.S. performances. When asked about their experience performing in Florida for the first time, they simply described it as “beautiful and nice.”

For many, like myself, this was more than a concert. It was a long-awaited chance to finally experience Lamp’s timeless sound in person, reminiscent of any experience within Japan. Lamp’s tour still has stops ahead, and their live show is something you’ll want to experience at least once. Whether you’ve been listening to Lamp for years or just discovered them, catching their next show is a MUST!
