“Today was an unusual day. It’s not every day you talk to your crew about when high tide is.” Tyler Joseph joked as he addressed the audience at Jones Beach, New York. “We’ve seen some interesting loads. We’ve seen some interesting set ups. I gotta say this might be one of my favorite venues we played.” The sold out crowd roared as the breeze from the ocean cooled the night.
Twenty One Pilots is Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Having come on the scene in 2009, it didn’t take long for them to become a household name with massive hits like “House of Gold”, “Tear in my Heart”, and “Stressed Out”. Currently out on the road for The Clancy Tour in support of their latest album Breach, which just came out September 12. Breach is a special release for the band and the fanbase as it brings to a close the story the band has been telling for a decade with the release of Blurryface.
Opening for Twenty One Pilots on this tour is Dayglow, the moniker of indie pop artist Sloan Struble, along with touring members Peyton Harrington, Brady Knippa, Norrie Swofford, and Colin Crawford. Dayglow is having quite the year with a new album out this year, a new original song made for A Minecraft Movie, and now this tour. The band’s high energy commanded the amphitheater pulling people quickly to their seats so they didn’t miss another moment. While the setlist spanned their whole catalog, it was the first major album, Fuzzybrain, that got the most representation, giving new fans a great entry point and old fans a celebration of the classics. You won’t want to miss this opening act.
Twenty One Pilots is a band that is no stranger to theatrics and stunning showmanship, and this tour celebrating the close of a 10 year saga is certainly no different. Josh emerged from the shadows to the stage first, donning a face mask with bright glowing red eyes. While Josh was getting into the thunderous beat of opening song “Overcompensate”, Tyler was launched from behind his piano to front and center stage, ready to take the audience on a non-stop ride. There are no shortage of varied memorable moments from the night, but to give a small preview a few of note were Tyler making his way through the crowd to find himself amongst a large group of fans dressed up as the popular lore character Ned and getting the entire amphitheater to crouch and launch into explosive dance. Then there’s the band’s tendency to explore the entire venue, with small stages popping up in various locations throughout the night for Tyler to run up, sing a few verses, and run back. Even Josh and his drum set popped up in a few different spots. If you are a long time fan, or a brand new fan, this show is not one to miss. Twenty One Pilots are the kind of performers that engage the crowd and have a real appreciation for their fans, something that is very present in their shows.
