A hair-raising buzz echoed through the splendor of the art deco constitution of The Wiltern as Tori Kelly took the stage with her incomparable voice and energy on November 9th. It was made evident from the first verse of “thing u do” that the night was going to be filled with nothing but authentic pluck captivating the entire room with her passion for not only her music but her fans as well. Opening act Maisy Kay was the perfect choice to set the tone for what was to come throughout the night. Her ethereal appearance of her butterfly mic and corset enchanted everyone’s attention immediately. Kay’s soulful, original singles made it easy for the room to instantly embrace the vibe.

Tori Kelly’s Purple Skies Tour marks her return to the spotlight after a three-year hiatus and highlights her newest EP, tori, which embraces a fresh, yet reminiscent pop and R&B sound inspired by the early 2000’s. This nostalgic throwback has been welcomed and praised amongst fans for taking us back to that golden age of R&B while notably keeping to her own stylizing. Even her merch has that unique style that so many young people are constantly looking for at thrift stores or big box stores flaunting wistful band tees.

As a new listener her welcoming energy created a comforting atmosphere that didn’t feel like getting singled out for not knowing all the songs or her history. For all listeners, whether longtime followers from her American Idol days, or those brand new to her music, the vibe was entirely inclusive. From aging girlfriends out having fun to bedazzled young children experiencing their first concert, everyone left having a night to remember. Especially the lucky few who had the chance to sing with Kelly or were serenaded over FaceTime. This level of fan engagement is what keeps the audience connected and coming back for more.

Both Kay and Kelly delivered powerful moments of raw connection and joy, leaving the crowd in awe and eager for more, chanting for an encore. Kelly answered with three final songs, sending fans into pure bliss.
